A Light of Hope in a 16-Year Struggle: Her Siblings Line Up for a Transplant
In Konya, 40-year-old Tuğba Manav was saved from kidney failure, a condition she had been battling for 16 years, by receiving a kidney transplant from her sibling.
A mother of one, Manav was diagnosed with kidney failure due to high blood pressure in 2009. Having been on medication for many years, she decided to undergo a transplant on the advice of her doctors when she was about to begin dialysis at Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Medicine Hospital.
During the transplant process, Manav's mother and three siblings volunteered to be donors. Despite some brief hesitation, thanks to the determination and tissue compatibility of her 36-year-old brother, Osman Öztürk, the transplant was completed successfully. Following tests, Öztürk and his sister underwent a successful kidney transplant. "I was very happy that my siblings were competing to be donors."
Tuğba Manav, who stated that she is in good health, shared her feelings about the transplant process:

"My doctors were very supportive throughout my illness. I was very excited when the possibility of a transplant without dialysis became available. My mother and siblings volunteered. I was very happy that my siblings were competing with each other to be donors. My mother was cared for first, but because she wasn't the right age, my siblings had to wait. Finally, my brother Osman received the transplant. I had surgery four days ago, and I feel very good now."
Manav also emphasized that the increase in cadaveric organ donations will bring hope to many patients waiting for a kidney transplant. "It's a great pride for me to donate my kidney to my sister."
Osman Öztürk, who donated his kidney to his sister and helped her cling to life, said:
"There was a small argument between the siblings about donating a kidney to my sister. We all volunteered, but in the end, I did. Seeing my sister regain her health makes me so happy. The morale of donating my kidney to my sister is a completely different feeling. I want everyone to be mindful of organ donation."
"Both of our patients are doing very well."
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selman Alkan, a faculty member in the Department of General Surgery at NEÜ Faculty of Medicine Hospital, stated that the operation was completed successfully and said:
"Our surgeries were completed successfully. Postoperatively, the patients have minimal scarring, which eliminates any aesthetic concerns for the donor. We are very happy to see that the kidney is now functioning effectively."
As Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, we emphasize the importance of organ donation and extend our best wishes to Tuğba Manav and her brother Osman Öztürk.
