A rare case occurred in our Cardiology Clinic of NEÜ Faculty of Medicine. The atrial septal defect (a hole between the heart atriums) detected in the mother and daughter was successfully closed two days apart. After detailed clinical and laboratory evaluations for the patients, the decision was made with the committee formed by the cardiovascular surgery clinic and the procedures were performed.
The patients who were hospitalized for 1 day were discharged the next day after their check-ups.
Although heart holes are mostly diagnosed and treated in childhood, some patients may come to advanced ages without being diagnosed due to their lack of complaints. In youth and later ages, shortness of breath, especially with exertion, is the most important complaint leading to diagnosis. Heart holes detected in adult patients in our clinic can be closed by entering the groin vein without the need for surgery.
We wish our patients a speedy recovery. We congratulate Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yakup Alsancak, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Seyfeddin Gürbüz and the Angiography team who performed the procedure.
