Third-year nursing student Esma Akbel conducted a session titled "Breast Milk and Breastfeeding Education" for a pregnant woman as part of her Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing course practice. The purpose of the session was to emphasize the benefits of breast milk and breastfeeding and to equip the mother-to-be with knowledge and skills to support her baby’s healthy nutrition.

The session began with an explanation of the composition and unique nutritional value of breast milk. Esma highlighted that breast milk contains proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals that strengthen the baby’s immune system. Unlike formula, breast milk provides antibodies that protect babies from infections, allergies, and chronic diseases later in life. Esma also noted that breastfeeding aids the mother’s faster postpartum recovery, reduces the risk of certain types of cancer, and strengthens the bond between mother and baby.

The session included practical techniques for successful breastfeeding. Esma demonstrated how to hold the baby in a comfortable position and emphasized the importance of ensuring a proper latch to prevent discomfort for the mother and to allow effective feeding for the baby. She discussed common issues such as pain, low milk supply, and nipple sensitivity during breastfeeding and provided information on methods to address these challenges. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of seeking support if the mother feels the need.

In conclusion, Esma’s training aims to provide the mother-to-be with knowledge and confidence in breastfeeding. This practice supports new mothers in starting a healthy journey with their babies, contributing to a positive and healthy process for both mother and baby.
