In the webinar on local governments and disaster management, Dr. Serdar BÜYÜKİPEKCİ moderated by Konya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department Fire Prevention and Training Branch Manager Latif ERDOĞAN took part as an invited speaker.

Local governments have a great responsibility in disaster management. Disasters directly affect local communities and local governments play an important role in disaster preparedness, response and recovery processes. In this context, Latif ERDOĞAN stated that there are some important issues that local governments should take into consideration in disaster management.

1. Preparedness: Local governments should be prepared for disaster situations and develop crisis plans. Emergency teams should be formed and plans should be made to intervene effectively before, during and after the disaster.

2. Community Awareness: Local governments should raise awareness of communities about disaster risks and organize training programs. It is important to ensure public participation to create disaster resilient communities.

3. Cooperation and Coordination: Local governments should cooperate and coordinate with other institutions (non-governmental organizations, public institutions, etc.). In this way, effective use of resources and rapid delivery of aid can be ensured.

4. Strengthening Infrastructure: Local governments should invest in strengthening critical infrastructure (water lines, electricity networks, etc.). In this way, infrastructure can be made more resilient in disaster situations.

5. Crisis Communication: It is of great importance for local governments to develop crisis communication strategies and provide the right information flow to the public.

Considering these factors, Konya Metropolitan Municipality has stated that it is aware of its responsibilities in disaster preparedness by taking an active role and that it is always ready for possible disasters.
