Ereğli Faculty of Education students, who wanted to listen to the story of the village institutes, which have an exceptional place in the history of Turkish education, from a graduate from there, hosted retired teacher İsmet Beyazıt at their school on Thursday 5 December 2024.
Mr İsmet Beyazıt, one of the last representatives of the village institute graduates, responded positively to the request of Nisa Nur Yüce, a fourth year Turkish Language Teaching student who reached him under the guidance of journalist Deniz Kurt, and agreed to come to our school and address us.
More than one hundred students from different departments of Ereğli Faculty of Education attended the interview held in the lecture theatre of Vocational School of Justice. İsmet Beyazıt, who told the students who asked him the secret of his long age that he did not smoke or drink alcohol throughout his life, shared many details about his education at İvriz Village Institute with the students. In the section where he explained the difference between theoretical education and practical education, he gave examples from himself and mentioned that he was engaged in mushroom culture and beekeeping. He stated that he broke a Turkish record by getting over 70 kilograms of honey from a hive.
Beyazıt said that the village institutes throughout Turkey were built by the students themselves, and that the graduates themselves built 8,000 village schools.
Beyazıt apologised to the students for the delay in reading some of the documents with the lens he took out of his pocket, which attracted the attention of the participants, and Beyazıt was appreciated not only for his knowledge but also for his courtesy.
At the end of the programme, İsmet Beyazıt ended his speech with Tevfik Fikret's quote ‘Even if you are a king, don't bend down.’ and Fuzuli's quote ‘Neither ruku from you nor qiyâm from me, salâmün aleyküm aleyküm salâm.’ At the end of the programme, flowers and a plaque were presented to İsmet Beyazıt by Nisa Nur Yüce, a 4th year Turkish student representing the students of the Faculty of Education.
We would like to thank the esteemed faculty members of Necmettin Erbakan University Ereğli Faculty of Education Prof. Dr. Selçuk Peker, Dr. Lecturer Hasan Hüseyin Güleç and our esteemed teacher İsmet Beyazıt who gave us the pleasure of listening to the village institutes from a village institute.
