Students from the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at Necmettin Erbakan University's Faculty of Aviation and Astronautics achieved significant success at the LIFT UP – Industry-Focused Undergraduate Thesis Projects Conference organised by Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TUSAŞ).
Our students Seda Nur Özsunar, Dilara Nur Bektaş, Sakine Kurtar, and Gamze Yaman, formed the Skylab team, which was selected among 20 teams out of 222 projects to present their project titled "The Effect of Impact Speed on Delamination Area and Dent Depth Distribution and YSA-Supported Analysis within the Scope of ASTM D7136" in a online presentation. Our students were invited to the physical presentation to be held at the TAI Kahramankazan Campus after ranking among the top 10 projects with their successful presentation.
As part of the project, the Skylab team conducted experiments at different speeds and energy levels to examine damage formation in CFRP laminates under low-speed impact. The original aspect of the study is that it not only reveals in detail the effect of impact speed on the delamination area and dent depth, but also offers a solution to reduce the physical test load by developing an artificial intelligence-based prediction model. This approach is particularly important as a reference for the design and testing processes carried out at TAI in line with BVID criteria.
During the project, Dr. Uğur Doğan and Yusuf Kepir provided technical support for the finite element analyses conducted using LS-DYNA software, Utku Şahin provided technical support for the NDI (Non-Destructive Inspection) applications, and Hasan Hüseyin Bilgiç provided technical support for the artificial intelligence model development process. The team successfully completed their work under the guidance of their academic advisor Prof. Dr. Mesut Uyaner and industry advisor Ege Demir.
