Our Faculty Receives TÜSEB Project Support Success
The project titled "Development of Biocompatible Diatom Silicon and Silver-Doped Apatite Wollastonite Graft Materials for Use in Bone Defects," led by Dr. Ömer Tarık Orhun from our Faculty's Department of Surgery, has been awarded 2.65 million Turkish Lira in support from the Turkish Institutes of Health (TÜSEB). The project will develop domestically produced, biocompatible, and environmentally friendly graft materials that can be used in the repair of fractured and damaged bones. Providing information about the "Development of Biocompatible Diatom Silicon and Silver-Doped Apatite Wollastonite Graft Materials for Use in Bone Defects" project, Dr. Lecturer Dr. Member Ömer Tarık Orhun said, “Our goal in this project is to produce biocompatible materials that can be used to replace broken or missing bones. It is crucial that these materials are environmentally friendly, easily accepted by the body, and accelerate healing. We are combining a material called apatite wollastonite with diatom skeletons obtained from a special marine creature. We are also adding silver additives to give them antibacterial properties. These structures will later be used to test bone healing both in the laboratory and in rabbits. Our work is being carried out with the joint contributions of many experts from the fields of biology, chemistry, materials, and veterinary medicine. This is a very important project in terms of both health and sustainable environmental solutions.” The aim is to make the high-tech biomaterials developed within the scope of the project usable for bone repair, especially in fields such as orthopedics, dentistry, and veterinary medicine.
