Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is a chronic lung disease that is common worldwide. This disease causes the airflow in and out of the lungs to be restricted, resulting in narrowing of the airways as a result of abnormalities in the small airways of the lungs. Although COPD is a preventable and treatable disease, it was the third leading cause of death worldwide, causing 3.23 million deaths in 2019. It is predicted that approximately 5.4 million deaths will occur annually due to COPD in 2060. While the prevalence of COPD worldwide is 11.7%, its prevalence in Turkey is 19.2%. COPD, which causes severe respiratory symptoms, is included in the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development agenda. World COPD Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) in collaboration with healthcare professionals and COPD patient groups worldwide. Its goal is to raise awareness, share information, and discuss ways to reduce the burden of COPD worldwide. The first World COPD Day was held in 2002. Every year, organizers in more than 50 countries hold events, making COPD Day one of the most important awareness and education events in the world. GOLD chooses a theme each year and coordinates the preparation and distribution of World COPD Day materials and resources. The theme for World COPD Day 2022 is “YOUR LUNGS FOR LIFE.” This year's theme aims to highlight the importance of lifelong lung health. Keeping the lungs healthy from development to adulthood is integral to future health and well-being. This theme will focus on ways to protect against factors that cause COPD from birth to adulthood, improving lung health throughout life, and what can be done to protect vulnerable populations.
