Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is a chronic lung disease that is common worldwide. This disease causes the airflow in and out of the lungs to be restricted, resulting in the narrowing of the airways as a result of abnormalities in the small airways of the lungs. Although COPD is a preventable and treatable disease, it was the third leading cause of death worldwide, causing 3.23 million deaths in 2019. It is predicted that approximately 5.4 million deaths will occur annually due to COPD in 2060. While the prevalence of COPD worldwide is 11.7%, its prevalence in Turkey is 19.2%.
COPD, which causes serious respiratory symptoms, is included in the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
World COPD Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) in collaboration with healthcare professionals and COPD patient groups worldwide. Its goal is to raise awareness, share information, and discuss ways to reduce the burden of COPD worldwide. The first World COPD Day was held in 2002. Every year, organizers in more than 50 countries hold events, making COPD Day one of the most important awareness and education events in the world.
GOLD chooses a theme each year and coordinates the preparation and distribution of World COPD Day materials and resources. The theme for World COPD Day 2023 is “Breathing is Life – Act Early”. This year's theme aims to emphasize the importance of regular check-ups, early diagnosis, and early intervention for lung health. We now know that COPD, which occurs as a result of many other factors in addition to smoking, can negatively affect the health of young individuals, starting from the early stages of life.
In addition to these negativities, conditions that can provide new opportunities for early diagnosis and rapid treatment in health are also increasing day by day. This campaign will focus on highlighting the importance of early lung health and how we can expand the horizons of COPD prevention and treatment by taking early action.
