Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when insulin is not produced in the body, is produced insufficiently, or the insulin produced cannot be used effectively and progresses with high blood sugar. According to the Turkey Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity and Endocrinological Diseases Prevalence Study (TURDEP)-II data, 42% of the adult population in our country is diabetic or prediabetic. Current data published by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) on diabetes prevalence shows that there are approximately 7 million diabetic patients between the ages of 20-79 in Turkey, and this figure corresponds to approximately 15% of the total adult population and that there are nearly half a billion diabetics worldwide. shows. It reports that the number will rise to over 700 million within the next 25 years unless significant action is taken to address the global impact of the condition.
Although diabetes is a public health problem, Type 2 diabetes is an 80% preventable disease. Within the capacity and possibilities of the countries; It is possible to improve the health and related quality of life of individuals with diabetes, to reduce the social and individual negative consequences of diabetes, and to minimize the negative impact of this disease on sustainable human development and economic development.
World Diabetes Day was established by the IDF and the World Health Organization in 1991 in response to growing concerns about the health threat posed by diabetes. It is represented by the blue circle logo, which was adopted in 2007 after the adoption of the United Nations Resolution on diabetes. The blue circle is the global symbol of diabetes awareness. It signifies the unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes epidemic. Each year the World Diabetes Day campaign focuses on a specific theme that runs for one or more years.
When diabetes is not diagnosed and treated early, it can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications. However, Type 2 diabetes and its complications can be delayed and prevented by adopting and maintaining healthy habits. The theme of the THIRD YEAR of the 2021-2023 World Diabetes Day campaign is “KNOW YOUR RISK, KNOW YOUR INTERVENTION”. In 2023, the campaign will focus on the importance of knowing the risk of type 2 diabetes to delay and prevent the disease and highlight the importance of access to accurate information and care to ensure timely treatment of diabetes-related complications.
