World Soil Day (December 5) is an annual celebration to highlight the vital importance of soil for human life and ecosystems. This initiative, which began in 2002 with the proposal of the International Union of Soil Sciences, was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013. The aim of the day is to highlight how effective protecting soil health is in critical issues such as food security, the water cycle and combating climate change.
